Naomi
graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in 1995 with a
Doctor of Optometry degree. During her time at PCO, Naomi was a cofounder
of the International Students Association (IOSA), a body that provided
support to foreign students. The Association made available translation
services at the PCO clinic as well as during lectures.
Her
efforts earned her an award from the Gold Key International Optometric
Association for service to optometry.
After
graduation, Naomi worked as a clinical instructor for a year at the Centre
for International Studies at PCO after which she joined Glasses Made Eazy,
Inc, Philadelphia, PA, USA. At the company, she served as the consultant
optometrist where she was responsible for all primary eyecare, staff
supervision and training, home visits and patient education.
Following
this, Naomi joined the Ophthalmic Department at the Episcopal Hospital in
Philadelphia in February 2000 as a staff optometrist, a position she held
till April 2003. At the Hospital, Naomi was responsible for providing all
optometry services as well as co-management of surgical patients
In 2003
Naomi returned to Uganda. Upon her return, was recruited at City Optics
and Lenses Centre, Kampala the consultant optometrist. Discovering that
the profession was not recognized in the country, she along with three
other optometrists co-founded the Optometrists Association of Uganda (OAU)
of which she was elected the vise chairperson. She is also a member of the
National Prevention of Blindness Committee as well as the National Low
Vision Working Group.
Naomi is
currently the financial treasurer of the African Council of Optometry
(2006 to date)
In
January 2006 Naomi was appointed the regional representative for
International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), East and Central
Africa. As the regional representative, she is responsible for situational
analysis (per country), service delivery and development, Human Resource
Development, advocacy, resource mobilization as well as program
organization. |
